Sun

SUNAt the centre of our solar system is the Sun, in which the Earth and all the other planets revolve around. The Sun is considered an integral part of astrology, representing our conscious mind, will to live and creativity.

The Sun is thought to reflect personal power, pride, authority, leadership qualities, the ego, our health and creativity and spontaneity. It is able to influence the fun side of life, allowing us to “shine” through recreational activities, vacations, social events and sport. It impacts on the creativity within a person, projecting the way they feel about art, business, children, and parenthood – particularly fatherhood.

The Sun travels through each sign of the Zodiac throughout a year, spending approximately a month in each sign. It is the Sun’s position on a person’s birthday that therefore influences what their star sign is – as the sun itself is a star. The precise date of sun signs varies from year to year, with a person born on the cusp relying on the sign nearest to them.

The Sun was worshipped in ancient times as Phoebus, Apollo, Sol, Helios in the Greek traditions. Being the son of Jupiter and Letona as well as the brother of Diana, he was born on the island of Delos and was sometimes called by that name too.

Though he was considered the god of prophetic wisdom, he also excelled at music and performance and gave satisfaction to the other gods through his lyre playing. Apollo also proved his great skill at archery and running and is regarded as the winner of the first Olympiad. In some instances, his cruel nature is depicted as fiery. He was able to shoot arrows of fire to vanquish his enemies.

In the Vedic tradition, the Sun is called by the names Surya, Aditya and Ravi. He is symbolised as moving a chariot, drawn by seven horses. This is symbolic of the seven colours of the rainbow, the seven wavelengths of which light is composed – violet, indigo, green, blue, yellow, orange and red.

The movement of the Sun into certain cardinal signs, namely Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn is considered of prime importance in the Hindu Vedic tradition and hence many sacred rituals, prayers and festivities concur with the entrance of the Sun into those particular signs. One such prayer is called Surya Namaskar which involves the recitation of twelve sacred names of the Sun. This prayer is said to stimulate vitality, remove disease and to develop radiance in the practitioner.

Practitioners of Hatha Yoga are familiar with the Sun worship exercise which is also linked to this mythological form of worship. The Sun being the centre of our Solar System is immediately recognisable at Sunrise as the giver of life light energy and vitality. It is for this obvious and self-evident fact, that the Sun has been said to rule the very life force and essence of our being.

When the Sun is strong in a horoscope, it is these characteristics which will prevail most predominantly. The Sun rules the willpower within each of us so that if the Sun is strong in your horoscope you will be endowed with a strong and indomitable will, the desire to rule over and dominate over others – and sometimes, unfortunately rather egotistically.

The Sun gives strong goal orientation and intense yearning for objectives in life, and so also has a very strong relationship to the professional or vocational aptitude that you are destined to pursue.

When the Sun is at the Midheaven (overhead at midday) it is at its most powerful position. If you were born around midday it is quite likely that you will have a very strong career path and may find yourself in a position of authority within your professional sphere at some stage in your life, usually earlier than later. That’s because the sense of destiny is well developed at an earlier age than most when the Sun is prevalent.

If the Sun is well placed and in harmony with other planets at the time of birth it can give quite remarkable organisational abilities, determination, tenacity and decisiveness. If however, the Sun is in a difficult relationship with other planets it will be prone to cause egotism and a bombastic and pompous nature making you very hard to live with.

The Sun being the centre of the solar system indicates the regal nature of the planet that rules the constellation of Leo. The symbol of Leo is the lion, the king of the jungle. The Sun therefore, is considered the king of planets (though truly speaking we know that the Sun is in truth a star). Kings, Presidents, Prime Ministers and all those in superior positions in government and industry are under the jurisdiction of the regal planet Sun. It is interesting to note how these very people will usually exhibit a very strong Sun energy at birth.

The Sun ruling the vitality within us has a direct link to the cellular structure of the human body. So again, strong Sun strong health! If weak, quite the contrary. The Sun rules the heart, the back and spine, the marrow and the cellular structure as well as circulation.

Sociologically the Sun is considered to be a masculine positive planet, so as well as ruling the king it rules males generally. The ruling numbers of the Sun are 1, 10, 19, 28. The ruling colours of the Sun are gold, yellow, copper, pink. The ruling day of the Sun is, of course, Sunday.
